What is muscle soreness?

When a muscle works it creates lactic acid and carbon dioxide - those are natural bi-products. Our body does a good job clearing these bi-products out of muscles and life is good. But when a muscle works more than normal, muscles create more bi-products than usual. We can think of it like a warehouse that's normally half full and 10 trucks normally work to carry the inventory away. If the warehouse suddenly becomes filled to capacity (like when our muscles work more than they're used to), and we still only have our regular 10 trucks then the inventory is going to sit there for awhile till the 10 trucks can get to it. When excess lactic acid and carbon dioxide molecules "sit" in the muscle waiting to be cleared, they become toxic irritants to the muscle fibers and we feel this as a sensation of soreness. The soreness will gradually go away as the trucks eventually get it all cleared out. Massage is like adding a fleet of 10 more trucks to help out.
