What is a muscle spasm?

Muscle spasms are nature's "splint" and occur for a very important reason - to keep an area immobile because something serious is going on. Spasms are severe contractions of the muscle and may be an important early sign of tetany due to calcium or Vitamin D issues.

Causes may include:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Low blood calcium levels
  • High blood magnesium levels
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Nerve damage
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Side effects of medications

Recurrent spasms in the hands or feet warrant a call to your health care provider.
