What is a muscle knot?

Muscle knots are chronically contracted muscle. If someone said "make a muscle" you'd curl up your arm and make your muscle hard. When a muscle is "made" chronically it becomes a habit and we lose our conscious ability to relax it. Our subconscious takes over. It becomes the job of a little cells called "proprioceptor" to maintain the tension - and it doesn't report to the conscious part of the brain.

Pressure applied to the knot during massage often fatigues the muscle allowing it to “give up” and let go. Once the knotted muscle relaxes, the area feels much more flexible and circulation is restored.
